The Spot Model for random-packing dynamics

The diffusion and flow of amorphous materials, such as glasses and granular materials, has resisted a simple microscopic description, analogous to defect theories for crystals. Early models were based on either gas-like inelastic collisions or crystal-like vacancy diffusion, but here we propose a cooperative mechanism for dense random-packing dynamics, based on diffusing ‘‘spots’’ of interstiti...

the use of appropriate madm model for ranking the vendors of mci equipments using fuzzy approach

abstract nowadays, the science of decision making has been paid to more attention due to the complexity of the problems of suppliers selection. as known, one of the efficient tools in economic and human resources development is the extension of communication networks in developing countries. so, the proper selection of suppliers of tc equipments is of concern very much. in this study, a ...

Random close packing in a granular model

We introduce a 2-dimensional lattice model of granular matter. We use a combination of proof and simulation to demonstrate an order/disorder phase transition in the model, to which we associate the granular phenomenon of random close packing.

investigating the feasibility of a proposed model for geometric design of deployable arch structures

deployable scissor type structures are composed of the so-called scissor-like elements (sles), which are connected to each other at an intermediate point through a pivotal connection and allow them to be folded into a compact bundle for storage or transport. several sles are connected to each other in order to form units with regular polygonal plan views. the sides and radii of the polygons are...

Random-order bin packing

An instance of the classical bin packing problem consists of a positive real C and a list L = (a1, a2, ..., an) of items with sizes 0 < s(ai) ≤ C, 1 ≤ i ≤ n; a solution to the problem is a partition of L into a minimum number of blocks, called bins, such that the sum of the sizes of the items in each bin is at most the capacity C. The capacity is just a scaling parameter; as is customary, we pu...
